💻 In Silicon Valley, the number of layoffs of IT specialists has almost doubled - there are 42% fewer vacancies for developers. The AI boom is bringing billion-dollar valuations to technology companies, but the situation for ordinary developers is becoming more difficult, writes Bloomberg. Over the past year, Silicon Valley companies have laid off about 14.5 thousand employees, and the number of vacancies for developers has decreased by 42% since 2022. The changes are especially noticeable among young professionals. Employment of workers 22–25 years old in the most AI-impacted occupations in California has decreased by approximately 17% since the launch of ChatGPT. In other areas the decline was 4.6%. At the same time, jobs aren’t just disappearing—the demand for skills is changing. The number of vacancies in the field of AI and computer science increased by 37%, and one of the fastest growing professions was forward deployed engineer - a developer who helps companies implement AI directly into business processes. Since 2022, the number of such vacancies has grown by approximately 600%, and the median salary has reached $202 thousand per year. Source
