President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev begins a working visit to Delhi. On September 12–13, India will host the XVIII BRICS summit, where Kazakhstan participates as a partner country, Kazinform reports. Trade and Investment Kazakhstan and India have maintained diplomatic relations for more than 30 years, but now cooperation is gradually expanding beyond the traditional trade in raw materials. In February 2026, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov visited India, where the parties discussed trade, investment, energy, agriculture, AI, critical minerals, space, transport and logistics. Kazakhstan announced the possibility of increasing exports to India by approximately $150 million. On the eve of Tokayev’s visit, the parties had already moved on to specific projects. Following the results of the Kazakh-Indian business forum in Chennai on September 9, framework agreements totaling $122 million were signed. At the beginning of September, a Kazakh business delegation of more than 100 people also went to India. Representatives of companies and government agencies visited industrial and technological facilities in Chennai, including sites in the field of robotics, AI, semiconductors and Industry 4.0 technologies. What Kazakhstan can offer India Indian business is interested in Kazakhstan's natural resources, including uranium, metals and minerals. Energy, petrochemicals, agriculture and industrial cooperation also remain promising areas. Kazakhstan, in turn, is interested in Indian technologies, pharmaceuticals, equipment and investments. The parties pay special attention to digital technologies. The importance of BRICS for countries Kazakhstan has the status of a BRICS partner country since January 1, 2025. In 2026, the chairmanship of the association passed to India. For Kazakhstan, participation in BRICS provides an additional platform for contacts with the largest economies of the association, including China, Russia, India, the UAE, Iran, Saudi Arabia and other states. Kazakhstan is also promoting the initiative to create an International Water Organization under the auspices of the UN. Thus, Tokayev’s visit to India takes place against the backdrop of a transition between Kazakhstan and India from traditional trade relations to broader economic cooperation. New production projects, transport routes, technologies and participation in BRICS can become the main directions for further rapprochement between the two countries. Earlier, Kursiv reported that Indian tractors would be produced in Kazakhstan.
